When my family and I moved into Fox Hall twenty-six years ago, the hall chandelier, along with five other chandeliers, were still entirely candle-lit. Lighting all the candles before an evening of entertaining was beautiful… and a bit daunting, to say the least! Over time, we transitioned to antique, yet electrified chandeliers, and preserved the charm of the previous candles by dimming the bulbs for similar soft lighting.
When it comes to creating a memorable evening, soft lighting is one of the most underestimated aspects of proper entertaining, as it sets the mood, tone, and sense of warmth that elevates every detail and moment into an inviting atmosphere for your guests.
Candlelight, dimmed bulbs, and flattering ambient lighting can transform a space completely, as artwork glows with depth, table settings sparkle, and faces appear even more radiant! I like to say, “It’s all about the lighting!” when capturing an attractive pose for a person in a photograph, and the same principle applies to your interiors in the evening. Soft lighting brings forth a charming glow that’s both romantic and inviting.
When renovating or building, trust me, you can never have too many dimmers installed! Dimmers allow you to tailor your lighting in the evening easily.
Soft lighting is not just about creating a pleasant atmosphere; it's about adding a touch of elegance. Don’t underestimate the magic power of a 40–60-watt soft bulb for a lamp! Additionally, a three-way switch will allow you to adjust the light as the night unfolds. One of my favorite secrets? Installing a few soft “pink” 40-watt bulbs in lamps in the living room—they cast a beautiful glow that flatters everyone, especially ladies!
When entertaining, I start the evening with the chandelier lights on low, and then gradually dim them even more as night falls. Before my guests enter the dining room, I lower the overhead chandelier lighting more than most people might dare—the room feels warmer, more elegant. Dimly lit dining rooms, where the flickering light from candles prevails, always seems to put guests at ease… probably because they all look splendidly fabulous and the atmosphere is palpably enchanting!
Stuart and I had the honor of dining at Buckingham Palace in the Picture Gallery for the 75th anniversary of The Animal Health Trust. The Picture Gallery was a sight to behold, with the stunningly stellar artwork displayed salon-style on the most attractive coral silk-damask walls, which were highlighted by picture lights, along with a few understated sconces with silk shades. The absence of harsh lights added to the evening's elegance, making it truly unforgettable and magical.
Lighting, when done well, isn't just a design element. It’s an important aspect that contributes to an inviting atmosphere for your warm hospitality. It adds that “secret charm.” Soft lighting contributes to the subtle difference between a pleasant evening… and one your guests will remember forever!
